The wooden sculpture, which is 7.40 m high, including a pedestal, shows a cut-off braid with its tip projecting up and a contortion of about 270 degrees in its longitudinal axis.

The phrase of the severed old braid emerged among students during the war of liberation against Napoleon and is considered a symbol for the replacement of an outdated social order by a new one.

The braid was an integral part of the wardrobe of the prussian military, the nobility as well as the bodyguard of Napoleon and thus formed the contrast to the revolutionary bourgeois short haircut. The cutting of the old braid is still a symbol of upheaval. Terms such as departure, change, reinvention of the individual e.g. after a terminated relationship, stand in connection with this saying until today.

The three individual strands of the braid are interconnected by their intertwining while preserving their individuality.

As a geometrical element, the triangle drwas through the entire sculpture, which underlines the mythological significance of the braid, which has been attributed to it since the Stone Age.
